LASER CUTTING
Cor-Ten – weathering steel

We laser cut Cor-Ten steel in thicknesses from 1.5mm – 20mm and 30mm can be supplied upon request.

Cor-Ten is a brand of corten weathering steel that slowly oxidises up to a point and then requires practically no maintenance. This product turns dark orange, creating an attractive effect which is particularly popular in architecture and sculpture.

Maximum Sizes

The maximum sheet size for most material thicknesses (1.5mm to 12mm) is available in 3000mm x 1500mm, a 10mm border is required around the outside, so the maximum part size we can cut is 2980mm x 1480mm.
15mm, 20mm, 25mm & 30mm are available upon request but on a smaller sheet size of 2500mmx1250mm.

Sheet sizes may differ subject to availability.

Properties of laser cut Corten Steel

Corten has excellent properties for forming, machining and welding. Corten steel is a structural steel, so after iron, carbon is the most important element, which is why structural steels are sometimes called carbon steels. The presence of carbon in steel makes it stronger and reduces the ductility, but lower carbon content makes it easier to weld.

At first, corten steel begins to rust in the same way as any other structural steel, when exposed to wet and dry weather conditions. Except in this case, the layer of rust transforms into a dense patina that seals the steel surface, protecting against further corrosion. The colour develops over time from orange-brown, to light brown, then eventually dark brown.

The speed of the colour change will depend on the environment that it is subject to, the more frequently it is wet and dry and the greater the amount of sulphur in the atmosphere, the faster the distinctive weathered steel surface patina will develop.

Please note: the patina will not develop if the surface is constantly wet.

Laser cutting is a fast and cost-effective way to obtain very accurate weathered steel components.

It is also the perfect process for high volume production of precision weathered steel components. The high tolerances of laser cutting mean that the last component off the machine will be identical to the first. With fast turnaround times, it is also suited to prototyping because of the fast turnaround, you can order, test and amend until you perfect your product.

As laser cutting specialists, we always make sure that we source the best materials and our equipment is set up to achieve the best results. Any laser cut steel will have a slight burr but a precise setup will reduce this.
