LASER CUTTING
Aluminium
We laser cut aluminium of various grades in thicknesses from 0.5mm – 20mm
In its pure form, aluminium is easily worked and possesses a high level of corrosion resistance but its low strength reduces the applications for which it is suitable. When alloyed, however, aluminium becomes an extremely versatile and widely used material, improved strength, corrosion resistance, ductility, workability, weldability and machinability are all possible.
Maximum Sizes
The maximum sheet size for most materials is 3000mm x 1500mm, a 10mm border is required around the outside, so the maximum part size we can cut is 2980mm x 1480mm. There are exceptions to this rule – these are marked in the materials tables.

Protective Film
Aluminium between the thicknesses of 0.9mm and 3mm can be ordered with a protective plastic coating which is specifically designed for fibre laser cutting. This will help keep the A face of the product scratch free and will give some protection during the fabrication process.
We laser cut Aluminium in these grades
The 1000 series grades of aluminium are the purest out of commercial aluminium grades. Each grade in the 1000 series contains a minimum of 99% aluminium and less than 1% alloying elements. 1050 is a popular grade of laser cut aluminium for general sheet metal work. Strength is relatively low, but excellent corrosion resistance, high ductility and a high heat and light reflection make it a very useful metal.
Applications for 1050 Aluminium
- Chemical process plant equipment
- Food industry containers
- Architectural flashings
- Lamp reflectors
The main alloying element of the 5000 series of aluminium grades is magnesium.
Aluminium alloy 5251 is a medium strength alloy possessing good ductility and therefore good formability. An alloyed non-heat treatable rolled aluminium designed for general sheet metal work where higher mechanical properties are required alongside some formability. Laser cut aluminium 5251 has a good surface finish and high corrosion resistance particularly in marine environments.
- Boats and marine structures
- Panelling and pressings
- Aircraft parts and vehicle panels
- Furniture tubing
- Silos and Containers
- Welded structures
The main alloying element of the 5000 series of aluminium grades is magnesium.
5083 aluminium alloy is the highest strength of all non-treatable aluminium alloys, it is known for exceptional performance in extreme environments being highly resistant to attack by both seawater and industrial chemical environments. Alloy 5083 also retains exceptional strength after welding. It has the highest strength of the non-heat treatable alloys but is not recommended for use in temperatures in excess of 65°C.
Applications for laser cut Aluminium 5083
- Shipbuilding
- Rail cars and vehicle bodies
- Tip truck bodies
- Mine skips and cages
- Pressure vessels
The main alloying elements of the 6000 series are silicon and magnesium.
6082 Aluminium is a medium strength alloy with excellent corrosion resistance. It has the highest strength of the 6000 series alloys and is known as a structural alloy, it has replaced 6061 in many applications. In plate form, 6082 is the alloy most commonly used for machining. The addition of a large amount of manganese controls the grain structure which in turn results in a stronger alloy.
APPLICATIONS FOR 6082 ALUMINIUM
Highly stressed applications such as:
- Roof trusses
- Bridges and cranes
- Transport applications
- Ore skips
- Beer barrels and milk churns
Laser Cut Aluminium Sheet
Laser cut aluminium must be set up properly on the correct equipment in order to avoid an excessive burr. Any laser cut metal will have a slight burr but a precise laser cutter setup will reduce this. As laser cutting specialists, we always make sure that our equipment is set up to achieve the best laser cut aluminium results.
