LASER CUTTING
Stainless Steel
We laser cut stainless steel of various grades in thicknesses from 0.5mm -25mm.
Laser cut stainless steel provides a good edge quality, clean and ready for secondary processes such as welding.
Stainless Steels contain 10–20% chromium as their alloying element and are valued for high corrosion resistance. They are commonly used in medical equipment, piping, cutting tools, and food processing equipment.
Maximum Sizes
The maximum sheet size for most materials is 3000mm x 1500mm, a 10mm border is required around the outside, so the maximum part size we can cut is 2980mm x 1480mm. There are exceptions to this rule – these are marked in the materials tables.

Protective Film
We can order stainless steel between the thicknesses of 0.9mm and 3mm with a protective plastic coating which is specifically designed for fibre laser cutting. This will help keep the A face of the product scratch free and will give some protection during the fabrication process.
We are able to order it for 4mm to 6mm but due to the cutting process it normally comes off.
Laser cut Stainless steel in these grades
304 stainless steel is the most popular grade of austenitic (non-magnetic) stainless steel. 304, like all other steels primarily consists of iron. 304 has a high nickel content, typically between 8 and 10.5 percent by weight, alongside a high amount of chromium at approximately 18 to 20 percent by weight. These alloying elements give 304 stainless steel excellent corrosion resistance, but also mean that 304 is generally more expensive than 430 but slightly less so than 316. Other alloying elements include manganese, silicon, and carbon.
Applications for 304 Stainless Steel
- Appliances such as refrigerators and dishwashers
- Food processing equipment and cutlery
- Nuts and bolts
- Piping
- Structures in environments that would corrode mild steel
Grade 316 stainless steel, has high amounts of nickel and chromium. It also contains silicon, manganese, and carbon. A major difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel is the chemical composition, 316 contains a significant amount of molybdenum, resulting in increased corrosion resistance, resistance to pitting and an increase in strength at high temperatures. 316 stainless steel can’t be hardened by heat treatment but can be readily formed and drawn. 316 is generally more expensive than 304 and 430.
Applications for 316 Stainless Steel
316 stainless steel is a popular choice for marine applications. Other common applications of 316 include:
- Chemical processing equipment
- Exhaust manifolds and heat exchangers
- Medical devices
- Marine environments
- The food industry
- Paper and textile processing
430 stainless steel contains between 16 – 18% chromium and has a low nickel content at a maximum of 0.5%. Other elements are present in trace amounts, a maximum of 1% each of manganese and silicon, 0.12% carbon, 0.03% sulphur and 0.04% phosphorous.
430 stainless has an excellent finish, so it is popular for use in decorative applications. Corrosion resistance is good and it is resistant to certain acids, making it useful when chemical exposure is possible. 430 does not harden when subjected to high temperatures and it is magnetic, unlike type 304. Formability is good, but it is not as easy to form or weld as 304.
Applications for laser cut stainless steel 430
- Automotive trim
- Domestic appliances
- Splash backs, panelling and table tops
- Equipment housings
- Kitchen utensils
- Flue liners

Laser cutting is a fast and cost-effective way to obtain very accurate stainless steel components.
It is also the perfect process for high volume production of precision stainless steel components. The high tolerances of laser cutting mean that the last component off the machine will be identical to the first. With fast turnaround times, it is also suited to prototyping because of the fast turnaround, you can order, test and amend until you perfect your product.
As laser cutting specialists, we always make sure that we source the best stainless steel and our equipment is set up to achieve the best results. Any laser cut stainless steel will have a slight burr but a precise setup will reduce this.
