Checker plate is a flat metal sheet with a raised diamond or bar pattern on one face, designed to improve grip and reduce slip hazards. It goes by several names: tread plate, Durbar floor plate, diamond plate, or Positive Grip Pattern (PGP) floor plate. The reverse side is flat for securing to surfaces.

The thickness of tread plate is measured “on the plane”, meaning the base metal thickness without the raised pattern. The pattern adds roughly 1.5mm to the total. For example, 3mm on the plane gives an overall thickness of approximately 4.5mm. This is important when specifying parts, as all our stock and cutting thicknesses are quoted on the plane.

We cut tread plate on Trumpf 5030 12KW and 24KW fibre lasers, holding tolerances to +/- 0.25mm as standard. Maximum sheet size is 3000mm x 1500mm, with a maximum part size of 2980mm x 1480mm

Treadplate Grades We Cut

Treadplate Grades We Cut

Mild Steel Treadplate

Mild steel tread plate, also known as Durbar, has a raised diamond pattern that is extremely slip-resistant. The surface is self-draining, making it easy to clean. Common uses for mild steel Durbar sheets include commercial vehicles, safety platforms, containers, stairs, and walkways. We stock Mtread from 3mm to 10mm on the plane (4.5mm to 12mm overall).

Aluminium TreadPlate

Aluminium tread plate, also known as 5 bar tread plate, aluminium diamond plate, or aluminium five bar, offers excellent grip and corrosion resistance. This makes it well suited for flooring in industrial buildings, food processing, vehicle manufacture, shipbuilding, and marine equipment. We offer aluminium tread plate cut to size in two grades: 1050 (decorative) and 5754 (structural), available to order from 3mm to 6mm on the plane (4.5mm to 8mm overall). Lead times vary.

304 Stainless Steel TreadPlate

Stainless steel tread plate gives you all the strength and durability of mild steel with far superior corrosion resistance. The multi-directional raised pattern aids drainage and increases grip in all directions. 304 tread plate can be cut, drilled, or welded, making it easy to position and fit. We stock 304 tread plate from 3mm to 6mm on the plane (4.5mm to 8mm overall).

Experience
We have been laser cutting metals for over 25 years. Treadplate is one of several specialist materials we process in-house, and we understand the quirks of cutting textured plate. The raised pattern means standard nesting and cutting approaches need adjusting, and we have the experience to get it right.

Quality & Traceability
Every part comes with full material certification and traceability. We are certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 27001, plus Cyber Essentials accredited. All stock is stored indoors to prevent corrosion and surface damage.

Multiple Materials Under One Roof
Need mild steel tread plate cut to size for a walkway, 304 tread plate cut to size for a food processing area, and aluminium checker plate cut to size for a vehicle floor? We stock or source all three from a single facility. One order, one delivery.

Fast Response
Request a quote and get accurate pricing within one hour during business hours. Send us your DXF, DWG, or NC files and we will come back with pricing and lead times.

Durbar / Treadplate

Treadplate is engineered for safety. The raised pattern creates a non-slip surface that performs in wet, oily, or dusty conditions where standard flat sheet would be dangerous. The self-draining surface means water and debris run off rather than pooling. Mild steel Durbar is the most common choice for heavy-duty applications. Stainless steel tread plate adds corrosion resistance for food, pharmaceutical, and marine environments. Aluminium tread plate keeps weight down while maintaining grip, making it the go-to choice for vehicle flooring and lightweight platforms.

Treadplate Cutting Applications

Our treadplate laser cutting service covers a wide range of sectors

Whatever your industry, our metal laser cutting service handles everything from one-off prototypes to production runs.

Electrical & Electronics
Busbars, connectors, terminals, and heat sinks. Copper’s high conductivity makes it the go-to material for electrical components, and laser cut copper gives you the tight tolerances these parts need..

Construction & Architecture
Roofing panels, cladding, rainwater systems, and decorative features. Copper’s natural patina and long lifespan make it a favourite for high-end building projects. We cut sheets of copper metal to your exact drawings.

Plumbing & HVAC
Fittings, and connection plates for heating, plumbing, and ventilation systems. Copper’s corrosion resistance and thermal conductivity are well suited to these environments.

Food & Hospitality
Worktops, splashbacks, trims, and push plates for commercial kitchens. Copper’s antibacterial properties make it a practical choice where hygiene matters.

Renewable Energy
Components for solar panels, battery systems, and power distribution. The shift towards electrification is driving strong demand for precision copper sheet metal UK parts.

Tread Plate FAQs

What is tread plate?

Tread plate is a flat metal sheet with a raised diamond pattern on one face to improve grip and reduce slips. It is also known as checker plate, Durbar floor plate, diamond plate or Positive Grip Pattern (PGP) floor plate, and the reverse face is flat for fixing to other surfaces.

What metals do you supply tread plate in?

We laser cut tread plate in mild steel, 304 stainless steel and aluminium, with aluminium available in 1050 decorative and 5754 structural grades.

What thickness of tread plate can you laser cut?

We laser cut tread plate from 3mm on the pattern upwards. Mild steel tread is stocked up to 10mm on the pattern, with stainless and aluminium tread up to 6mm. The overall thickness is slightly higher because of the raised pattern.

What is tread plate used for?

Its slip-resistant, self-draining surface suits walkways, stairs, safety platforms, commercial vehicles, containers and flooring, including food processing and marine environments.

Is tread plate recyclable?

Yes. Whether mild steel, stainless or aluminium, tread plate is fully recyclable.
